What does it mean when your elf on the shelf goes missing?

I brought her home and penny and simon were so so excited to read the book and see the elf, etc.  so i put her on the lamp shade near the entry and the next time i looked for her she was gone.  penny and simon are both to the point where they are good finders and i think they would fess up.  the neighbor kids???  maybe?  It is like she vanished into thin air.

Sophie's theory is she booked it back to the north pole telling santa she didn't want to be in our house...please don't make her go back. OR even creepier that she's hiding somewhere in our house, watching us in the dark.

Really Elf on the shelf is kind of a creepy concept, but i saw a cute instagram from my friend in texas who just announced her 7th (!) baby on the way. Anyway, she had her elf on some kind of mantle or side table with a mug of hot chocolate powder, marshmallows and a spoon tipped over like he was trying to make come cocoa.  CUTE.  crap, people are cute.

I totally would have done cute things like that with my elf, had she not run away.  But I also don't want to spend another 30 bucks this christmas for an elf. DO I?!   so sad.

*** UPDATE there is a whole crazy list of fun elf on the shelf ideas on pinterest. what a shock. 30 bucks?????? do i go get it again?????
