The gal from Simple Lovely is onto something. The opposite of a spending spree, she is doing the spending hiatus. Sounds like she usually does it the first of the year for three months. This year she's doing Feb1-Apr1 and it's just refraining from all non-essentials.
So, guess what? From March 1-May 1 I, too, will be on a spending hiatus. I need it. doug and i have been talking about stuff lately. we did a major overhaul when we moved into this house. Nearly two years later were still purging STUFF only to be buying more STUFF (just better or exactly the right kind of stuff, you see.)
When Owen was about 3, I remember sitting on a Pontoon boat on Big Bear Lake with Sissy Spacek. Totally random, i know, but Doug was shooting a movie with Schuyler Fisk and Sissy Spacek is her mom and so BAM we were all out on a boat together. Anyway, i remember her talking about cleaning out their lake house and about how you spend the first half of you life collecting things and the second half giving it all away.
Well, as is normal for people moving from an apartment to a house, i can say we've definitely been in the collecting mode and i'm ready for a break.
I came across a quote that said something like...
Wants are never ending. The less you need, the freer you become.
I also like this one from the Simple Lovely site.
So, I'm gonna give it a shot. Using what we have, being more creative and just being happy with what we have.
There will be a few exceptions, of course, like penny's bday and this gym membership for me. but that's IT. I swear!
Anyone want to join? I'll be a blast, I'm sure of it!

I'm totally in....
ReplyDeleteMan oh man, this is going to be the hardest thing I've EVER done. Wanna make it even harder and say..... NO SUGAR too?
I think I'll post this on my blog tomorrow. Great idea!
loves....
P.S. I absolutely adore Schuyler Fisk... I run to her 4 days a week : )
Let me know if you're up for a DOUBLE challenge.... You know you are!
ReplyDeleteooooh. that is a good idea BUT it does conflict with MY BIRTHDAY! hahah.
ReplyDeletei could really use it too. Great idea. What kind of things are you talking about? clothes and makeup and such?
Yes, I have the same question as Brooke. Does it include girls night out??? Movies, drive thru dinner, or a hot chocolate. Or just THINGS - like household item, clothes, make-up. Adam and I have pretty much been doing this since the New Year. What I have learned for me is that meal planning, and planning ahead in general is ESSENTIAL. Of course we haven't been super strict, but we have some pretty good financial goals this year, so I definitely think twice before buying something. My weak spot is getting treats for my kids - like a toy car at Target for T or something like that. I am a major purger (I think due to living in apts), so we don't have too much stuff. Adam almost hates how much I donate, but it's better to purge I say. Bless someone else with some of your stuff. And I love those quotes.
ReplyDeleteWahoo! Let's go ladies! I'm going to post a little bit more about it right now.
ReplyDeleteand Julie! what album do you have? she's pretty rad
Em...
ReplyDeleteI don't have an album. I just download her songs off of itunes. You are so right, she is RAD!
K, I'm totally on board with you. Starting March 1.... let's do this!
I'm on a TWO YEAR+ spending hiatus (all in the name of education). Although essentials do include reasonable outings with the kids and my skin care (although hair and nails get no star treatment)! So I'm with you. We'll play the cost-friendly way! :)
