October!

I have been thinking a lot about family traditions lately. i think traditions are what kids remember most about growing up.

Well, that and crazy vacations where thing go terribly, comically awry but then somehow you all end up having a blast and laugh about it all for years after. NOT that that ever happened to my family.... a hem.

So, even though i haven't been the best at coming up with great family traditions, I've made an octobers resolution to put some major thought and effort into traditions from here on out.

And it that spirit and on this FIRST weekend of October we're going to be having an Oktoberfest of our very own and replacing beer and Borsht with homemade donuts and these cheesecake caramel apples. I have it on good authority they are the ULTIMATE in caramel apples.
And then we'll watch the greatest halloween movie 'The nightmare before Christmas.'

But, i'd love to hear your traditions. What do you do with your kids through out the year? I need help, you guys! (Did i happen to mention sophie is going to college in 6 short years???)

And now i need to go help the Penny swinging from my pants and screaming for my attention (or a turn on the computer.)

Happy October, Everyone!

  1. Well of course we always went to Underwood to pick our pumpkins and do the corn maze (I will now have to find a new pumpkin farm here). But I always make my pumpkin yummies. Pumpkin bars, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies (obviously I like pumpkin). I think kids also remember the yummies that are brought out around this time of year and will remember them as they get older. That is all I pretty much do. Christmastime is also a fun time for holiday traditions. You should have a post on that too. See what everyone does....

  2. I love pumpkin, too! it helps that you're a great cook, renee. memories and good food always go hand in hand which means i'm sort of up a creek. ha ha.

And yes, I'm looking for any tradition ideas for all year long. i have a good friend that goes over the top for april fools. i'd like to take a chapter from her book, too!

  3. the most thing i remember is how awesome my mom was to get super dressed up and really into halloween. lots of gore. it was serious business.

i really want to do a haunted house...maybe we could do it like every other year trading our houses....on a year we just didn't have babies though.

i've never seen that movie, think my kids would like it?

  4. I'm with you. I love traditions, and I think you do have to plan them a little, but I love when they happen organically b/c that's what your family loves doing, and it just happens that you keep doing it b/c it is so FUN. For me October traditions are planning costumes and being creative about that. Cider on the stove, smelling up your house all yummy. Going to pumpkin patches - even the funny little small ones on the corner - and letting your kids run around. Oh, and candy. I love Tapia Brothers, and I love Underwood. I'm with Brooke that I totally remember my dad dressing up and playing spooky music out our front window on Halloween like it was a haunted house. And The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

I feel like you guys totally have traditions. We've gotten trick-or-treating with you and you have your chili and donuts/cider/hot chocolate thing going on. PS - I'm gonna plan a Friday playdate @ Tapia Brothers soon. Maybe next week or so.

  5. On St. Patrick's Day, my Mom dyed everything in the house green --- the toilet water, the peanut butter, the milk, the mayonnaise, and so on and so on. Our dinner was all green. She went crazy with green on that day and I loved it!
