Lookback: 4th of July...

Every year Doug's family gets together for a big party on the 4th and from all reports the eating contest was the major hit of the day. I believe the winner was Daniel who ate all the brothers/sisters and in-laws under the table with a plate full of jalepenos, hot cheetos and other deadly foods.

My family met at my parents' cabin for the week following the 4th for an entire week of mountain fun. This year we missed out on both fun family events thanks to a few minor episodes of early contractions and an abscessed tooth that made my face swell up like Eric Stoltz from The Mask (think 80's Cher not 90's Jim Carrey) and took me more than a week to recover. Oh, the pain. Who knew pregnant women could take Vicodin?

Anyway, we packed for the cabin on Monday, left early tuesday morning and got about an hour from home when i started having really painful contractions. I asked Sophie to start timing them and then decided driving 7 hours and 10,000 ft above sea level without Doug but with all the kids and contractions was a very bad idea. The cabin is above a ski resort and the nearest hospital is more than an hour away. So, with everyone in tears, we turned around and headed back home. We met Doug at Bob's Big Boy for breakfast which didn't really make up for our lost vacation but made Owen extremely happy once he started eating his Teddy Bear pancakes.

So instead we partied with friends at a local neighborhood parade and BBQ'd at the Heders {face still swollen and all}. It was awesome.

Cute friends Willa (above) and Tyler (below) at the parade.

The evening sort of ended like this for Miss Penny Pie

  1. I love that shot of Penny. All of you pics are great. Ah, the joys of being married to a cinematographer.

  2. isn't that the same cabin Doug nearly died at? I think he told us about some cabin high in the woods. I think you better stay clear from there :) Glad everything ended up ok.

  3. Love this post.
I cant believe you are having early contractions AGAIN! ugh! So how many weeks are you? Are you going to have to go on bed rest again? What did the dr. say?

Are you going to dish about the sex of the baby? come on now...

I so wish we could have gotten together back in June. You look great, well THAT side of your face does. So how does one get an absessed tooth? It sounds awful! Our cat had an absess and it was about the foulest thing Ive ever seen.

  4. I know. Contractions again!! Luckily, I haven't had to go on bed rest because with Penny running around they'd have to just put me in the hospital. It would be impossible!

Cheryl...it's a little boy! I'm now 34 weeks but they started around 27 and come and go now and then. Like when i try to go on vacation.

And the tooth? I'm not sure it was an abscess but it sure felt like that... or cancer. It was just a infection that got really bad when i got pregnant because my immune system is slightly weakened. that's my theory. SO glad it's over.

  6. That is the funniest picture of Penny I've ever seen . . . well, really of any kid perhaps! Oh the drama and the pain of being a little toddler!

  7. You really do take great pictures. I love the one of Doug at the top.

And I feel like that at the end of the day sometimes too Penny, so don't you worry about it. You cry if you want to girl.

  8. I have no words to express how cute that last picture of Penny is. Also, I have no words to express how much you were missed at the cabin. Never fear there is always next year.
